SACRAMENTO, CALIF (CDCAN) [Updated 07/26/2010 11:45 AM (Pacific Time)] – Ron Brown, [photo left] a widely respected and loved Sacramento area disability and civil rights advocate, passed away Friday (July 23) at his Sacramento home. His unexpected death stunned and deeply saddened friends and other advocates in the Sacramento area as news spread.
His passing came ironically two days before the 20th anniversary of the enactment of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and just three days after Governor Schwarzenegger signed into law SB 1256 that will honor every January 23rd, the life and work of disability rights leader Ed Roberts.

After returning home in December, her condition was again critical due to serious complications that required last month a 10 day return to the hospital.

SACRAMENTO, CALIF (CDCAN) [Updated 11/20/09 07:20 AM (Pacific Time) - Maggie "Dee" Dowling, a longtime respected disability and senior advocate remains in the intensive care unit (ICU) at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek recovering after major surgery on Tuesday (November 17) to remove a life threatening cancerous tumor. Dowling - known simply as "Maggie Dee" across the state, remains in very serious condition but her doctors report that they were able to remove all the cancer. She faces a long recovery and is expected to remain in the east bay hospital for some period of time.

SACRAMENTO, CALIF (CDCAN) [Updated 08/11/09 08:29 AM (Pacific Time) - Eunice Kennedy Shriver, the sister of President John F. Kennedy and US Senators Robert and Edward Kennedy and the mother of California's First Lady Maria Shriver [photo left with her mother], passed away at age 88 years old at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, Massachusetts this morning (August 11). Eunice Shriver was a respected advocate for the rights of persons with developmental disabilities. She was the mother-in-law of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Her husband of 56 years, Sargent Shriver, who is battling Alzheimer's, was with his wife at the time of her death, along with all of their five children: Maria Shriver, Robert, a Santa Monica city councilmember; Timothy, who chairs the Special Olympics; Mark, an executive at Save the Children, a non-profit; and Anthony, founder and chair of Best Buddies International, a volunteer organization for persons with disabilities. All of the Shriver's 19 grandchildren were also with her at the time of her passing.

SACRAMENTO, CALIF (CDCAN) [Updated 06/06/09 02:40 AM (Pacific Time)] - As previously reported, William “Bill” D. Young, [photo left from Senior Spectrum Magazine] a widely respected and loved advocate for senior and disability rights, passed away Saturday, May 30, at the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento after a month long illness. He was 76 years old.
Wife and partner Lola Young in a message sent out Saturday evening, just after 7 PM, wrote:
“Hi All - It is with regret that I must tell you that Bill passed away today, May 30, 2009. Thank you all for the prayers and thoughts that have been sent.”
A memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, at 11:00 AM on June 3, 2009 at Southgate Seventh Day Adventist Church, 2299 Meadowview Road, Sacramento, CA, 95832 (24th Street is the nearest major cross street. Take I-5 South and exit Meadowview Road).

SACRAMENTO, CALIF (CDCAN) [Updated 05/06/09 10:43 AM (Pacific Time) - As previously reported, longtime senior and disability rights advocate Bill Young remains in very serious condition at the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento.
Bill Young and wife Lola are long-time members of the California Senior Legislature, and also members of other senior and disability advocacy groups including the Gray Panthers.
Margie Metzler of the Sacramento Gray Panthers reported this morning that Lola Young yesterday sounded “upbeat” but exhausted” and that Lola believed that Bill has been helped – and would continue to be helped – by visitors, cards and messages.
